We may have had some mixed feelings about the new Britney Spears single "Hold It Against Me," but the people have spoken -- and it's a huge hit! On Tuesday, the song became legally available for purchase on iTunes, where it instantly shot up to #1. And Spears' record company says that the song broke all previous records for most radio play on its first day of release.
Why the big reaction to this good-but-not-amazing Spears song? Because Britney is back, baby! This song signals the comeback we've all been waiting for: it says that train-wreck Britney is a thing of the past, and strong, sexy Britney is back in charge.
There are two people in the world, however, who aren't happy about Britney's new song: the Bellamy Brothers, a country-pop duo who think her new song rips them off. David and Howard Bellamy had a #1 hit in 1979 with their country single "If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me." The song sounds absolutely nothing like Spears' track, except that it uses the same play on words in the chorus.
"(Britney Spears) is a talented gal," one of the Bellamy Brothers told TMZ. "But professionally, well, in all honestly, we feel completely ripped off. Where's the originality?"
The Bellamy Brothers seem to have forgotten that they stole that line, too: their chorus takes the quote "If I said you had a beautiful body, would you hold it against me?" word-for-word from Groucho Marx! Where's the originality now, fellas?
