Oprah Winfrey Tells Piers Morgan She Contemplated Suicide at Age 14

In the inaugural interview of Piers Morgan Tonight, Oprah Winfrey confessed that as a 14-year-old pregnant girl, she contemplated suicide.

"I knew that me getting pregnant was a result of bad choices," Winfrey said."And [of] not having boundaries, and the [sexual abuse from when I was 9 to 13]."

Winfrey’s mother wouldn’t allow her to stay with her, so the teen was sent to live with her father in Nashville. "I hid [my pregnancy.] I hid the whole thing," she said. "My father, as a part of his decree about what’s going to go on in this house, said to me… 'I would rather see a daughter of mine floating down the Cumberland River, than the bring shame on this family and the indecency of an illegitimate child.'"

The talk show queen and OWN network head said she thought that prior to losing her child, she really believed she was going to have to kill herself. "When I was 14, if you’re having a baby, your life is over," she said. Losing the child "with whom [she] had no connection whatsoever" was a great relief and Winfrey’s "second chance" at life.

Winfrey also told Morgan that she was "not the marrying kind" and while she loved children, being a mother wasn’t something on her to-do list. She also shut down Morgan’s attempts to get her to discuss the rumors of a lesbian relationship with her best friend Gayle King.
