When Mel Gibson's highly offensive audio-taped rants made the news this summer, celebrity friends like Jodie Foster and Whoopi Goldberg swore that the Mel they knew wasn't racist or sexist. Now Winona Ryder is saying that the Mel Gibson on the tapes sounds a whole lot like the Mel Gibson she once knew.
In the new issue of GQ, Ryder, 39, recalls meeting Gibson about fifteen years ago at a big Hollywood party. She had come with a gay friend, and says Gibson was "really drunk."
"He made a really horrible gay joke," the Black Swan actress recalls. "And somehow it came up that I was Jewish. He said something about 'oven dodgers,' but I didn't get it. I'd never heard that before."
Holy crap -- who the heck says something like that? Mel Gibson does, apparently. But because his Hollywood reputation was still largely untarnished, nobody bought Ryder's story.
"I was like, 'He's anti-Semitic and he's homophobic,'" she says. "No one believed me! "
We believe you, Winona! Ryder's story is sad, though, because if it's true, it means that Mel Gibson's problem runs deep. We know that Gibson had a drinking problem and went to rehab in 1991. But around the time Ryder says she met him, he was theoretically recovering -- and doing some of the best work of his career in Braveheart and Maverick. Unfortunately for Gibson fans, it sounds like the guy on those tapes has been lurking around Hollywood for quite some time.
